105th President’s Message
Hello Fellow Lions,
It is both an honor and a privilege to serve as your 2025–2026 President of the Lufkin Host Lions Club. Over the past several years on the board, I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for our club’s legacy and the incredible work we’ve accomplished together.
Since our founding in 1920, names like Kurth, Denman, Trout—and yes, even Henderson—have been instrumental to our club. These are the same families who played a major role in building Lufkin into what it is today. These families left lasting legacies, and all of them made a difference by choosing to serve. As you drive around town and see streets, parks, and buildings bearing their names, it’s remarkable to think that many of those names belong to our club’s founding members. They had a heart for service and a vision for a stronger community.
While I doubt the inaugural members of the club could have predicted the midnight rodeo or some of our more colorful traditions, I know they’d be proud that we continue to serve with the same dedication to our great community.
Today, we are the largest Lions Club in Texas—and one of the largest worldwide. While the founders had great vision, it takes each of us, past, present, and future Lions, to create such a success. We've grown by inviting others to share in our mission of service.
As a volunteer organization, year after year, we host the greatest show on dirt. Many people outside the club don’t realize the Angelina Benefit Rodeo is its own organization. To be part of it, you first have to join Lufkin Host Lions Club. When I was thinking of joining, a member asked me, “Do you want to drink beer at the rodeo or cook waffles once a year?” While I enjoy my yearly waffle bake, fifteen years later, I’m still here—and I’ll keep coming back as long as Gold Buckle keeps holding up their end of the deal.
Our motto is “We Serve,” and no group lives that out more than this one. Some of you give countless hours, especially during rodeo week, and for that, I’m incredibly grateful.
As we look ahead to the coming year, let’s keep building on the legacy of those who came before us. Let’s continue serving and strengthening our community, leaving it better than we found it.
Thank you for all you do. This club doesn’t run without you.
To quote one of my favorite Texas country musicians:
“The road goes on forever, and the party never ends.” —just be sure to get your Rodeo work done!
Roar,
Scott Neill
